Reflection Blog Post

1.  My favorite project I completed throughout this semester was easily the Final Graphic Design assignment. Personally, I thought this was the most fun Adobe app to use. Photoshop was easy, simple, and well laid-out. I believe that my Final Graphic Design project was also my best work all semester. For some reason, I really got into Unit 1 as a whole. I just wish that all my other final projects came out as good as my Final Graphic Design. Below is my Final Graphic Design I am very proud of.

2. Although I enjoyed learning Photoshop the most throughout the semester, I believe that the skills I learned with Adobe Premiere will be something I can use later on in life. Who knows when I will have to use a video for a project and this way I now know how to edit the video and potentially do more well on a future assignment. Also, a lot of the tools I learned how to use will definitely help me out later down the road because now I know what they’re symbol look like and I understand what they do universally for Adobe.

3. My career path I see in my future is first, attending and graduating from law school. I am currently leading towards a career in profiling for a federal agency. It is something I have been giving some serious thought lately. To be completely honest I really do not anything that would I learned in this class that would be influential in my career path. Not to say I am not grateful for what I have learned in this course, just simply that this class is much different from my career path.

4. The only skill I wanted to learn going into this class was how to successfully use Photoshop. Considering that we went over Photoshop in unit 1, I can confidently say that I do not wish there was any other skill I wish I would have learned.

5. Basically the only resources that I found helpful outside of all the class materials were friends of mine who had taken the class already and were COM majors. These people were life savers when I did not understand how to complete a task in a tutorial or export a video from an Adobe app.

6. Personally, I think that our Final projects were graded way too hard, I understand that there was most likely parts of the project I did not accomplish or turn in on time, but even when I did I felt like I was getting graded as if I was a professional blogger. The only problem is that I am not a professional Adobe user/professional blogger and this was my first time ever using any of these apps.

Video Story Final

So I started my final video project by first developing the storyboard. Although, I did not end up following the original plan entirely, I am happy with what the finished product ended up being. The main part I was unable to obtain and implicate into my video was the ending, in which I was going to add a clip from a live concert from inside the senior ball room. The second step to completing my final video story was to go and get the raw footage. I got two 30 second clips of the Student Entertainment Board’s office and a brief meeting the programmers were having. Unfortunately, one of my two videos ended up getting clipped into two shorter videos. Eventually I then went through and edited the footage to get out all the unneeded seconds of me shaking with the camera or moving to another angle. I then went through the clips and added transitions to help the video better flow from shot to shot. As well as added titles to both the beginning and end to make the video feel a little more professional. Although, I am not good at making titles in premiere. Once the video was done I then scheduled an interview with the Concert’s programmer, Julian Khalifa. I asked him to talk about the office and what they do and where they are located as well as talk about what their meetings are put together for. I also, let him watch the video while doing the commentary for him to be able to get a better grasp on what he was supposed to be commentating over. That ended up making everything go a lot smoother as well because when I added the commentary to the video it almost already lined up perfectly with all the scene changes. Overall, this was a fun project, and I am glad I learned how to use this part of adobe because maybe I’ll have to use it again one day.

For some reason one of my 30+ second clips split into two.

Visual Elements Audio Elements
0:00-0:25  Footage of SEB office with hopefully a few people working I want the audio to be like an interview again with the Programmer, at this point describing what his work place is like
0:25- 0:50 Now this footage of SEB concerts desk a little more up close with a programmer work Continuing with the interview but more personally structured towards concerts in a particular
0:50-1:15 Now I am hoping to get footage of the CUB senior ballroom With this footage id like the programmer to walk the listeners through what they do to prepare the room for the concerts
1:15-1:30 More footage of the ballroom maybe some footage of an actual concert to finish the interview ↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓

Audio Final Draft

Okay so my project was an interview with the Director of the Student Entertainment Board’s Concert Committee, Julian Khalifa. Which is perfect for my theme considering since my overall Com210 theme for the semester is SEB’s Concerts committee. I wanted to ask Julian questions that could help listeners get a better understanding of what it is like to be in his shoes as well better inform students what SEB Concerts is all about.

So after reading all my peer reviews it was clear that there was a consensus of things that I needed to improve on or change. This included making more follow up questions for Mr. Khalifa in order to improve the fluency of my interview to keep it away from being more robotic. I also needed to make some sort of exit for the entire interview saying since I completely forgot to do that as well. But a major problem my rough draft had was that the volume from the different clips were a little whack and did not match up very well with one another. I definitely appreciated all the constructive criticism and kept all these pointers in mind while producing my final draft.

Now while making my Audio Final Draft I first restarted the entire process from the beginning. I wanted to make sure to go through every clip I recorded and remove all the extra dialogue that was unneeded such as words like “um or uh”. This has a major role to play in why my clip from rough draft to final got so much shorter. Secondly, as much as I wanted to take my peers advice and interview Julian with more follow up questions, he was unable to do it. Which is understandable because he is a senior here at WSU taking tough classes and it is also Dad’s Weekend. Moving on, I then went and made a exit for the interview just thanking Julian for indulging the listeners and myself on what it is like to be in his shoes. Finally, I added a nice little ambiance to the background of the exit and the intro that faded in and out. Actually I did one more thing; I also adjusted the audio as best as I could to get the different clips to match up a little better so it would be easier to listen to.

Audio Story Rough Draft

So for my project I interviewed Julian Khalifa. Who happens to be the Director of the Concerts committee for the Student Entertainment Board here at WSU. I wanted to interview him because I did not think there would be any better individual for me to interview considering my theme is entirely SEB Concerts. Also, Interviewing Julian was an easy task for me to accomplish because not only is he my friend but he is also my neighbor. Anyways, I wanted to get a better insight into how the Concerts committee works; ranging from choosing artists to advertising.

While completing this project, I first developed the questions I wanted to ask Julian Khalifa. I then recorded myself asking each question in one long uncut clip through the recording device in Audition itself. For me the most difficult part, besides focusing not to mumble, was developing and recording a half-decent introduction. Once I had those recorded, I went and had Julian answer all the same questions on one long take again. After I had all 3 audio clips uploaded to my Audition, I then went and started to organize them. I mainly cut out the all the emptiness in between the questions and the answers. Finally, I made sure that it all flowed pretty well and then I finished by cutting a few unnecessary parts out to make sure the clip was under 2 minutes.

For my final draft of this project I want to do a few things better. One of those things being that I would like to go through the entire clip again and take out all the unnecessary audio such as, um and like. Secondly, I would like to add some sort of intro and/or outro music to the clip itself. Maybe even have it playing more quietly the entire clip in the background. Lastly, I might like to ask some more interesting questions.

Logo Project Final Draft

The purpose of this logo is to brand the Student Entertainment Board’s Concert committee. As of right now, the Student Entertainment Board has branding guidelines they follow when advertising any of their events. However, the concerts director Julian Khalifa has said before that he wants the concerts committee to have their own logo because they bring in so much revenue to SEB on their own. This logo would go on any and all concert advertisements.

My original idea and logo draft followed the fun theme of concerts with lights, speakers, and fun fonts. After looking through the comments my peers made as well as  visiting class readings and websites for help on logo designing, I realized I’d need a more simplistic approach to this design. Simplicity tends to be more appealing to the eye. Simplicity is also more versatile and you are able to apply it to promotional material easier. My last design would have brought too much attention to itself.

I wanted to keep either the speakers or lights on the logo as a creative and fun element, but I also wanted the logo to resemble other typical logos. I started by choosing bold yet simple fonts for the words and used the type on path tool to type out Student Entertainment Board. I found that the logo needed a frame or guide, so I made a circle to encompass the whole thing. What took the most time was the lights. The lights were made entirely out of shapes. I manipulated two squares and a circle to create the shape, and filled one of the rectangles with a gradient that went from yellow to transparent for the lights. I united the circle first square to create the base of the light as well. I grouped and duplicated this for the second light and messed around with their placement until I was pleased with the look.

Overall, I think I made significant progress between my draft and final draft for my logo. I like that my final draft took a more professional approach than the draft. It isn’t big and flashy, but it’s exactly what a logo should be.

Logo Project Draft

For my logo design, I wanted to create a logo for the Student Entertainment Board’s Concerts committee. The Student Entertainment Board has its own branding guidelines with logos and templates that they like to use for all of their committees; however the concerts committee itself does not have its own logo. The logo was inspired by the idea of concerts itself, and it is very clear what the committee does based on the logo. It is pretty identical to the design on my sketch. I started by using the Gotham font that SEB likes to use for most of their material. I downloaded a font for the “SEB” that was related to showtime and broadway to go with the theme. I created the speakers on the sides just using the shapes tool. I created the lights by making a circle with a white to yellow gradient on the inside. I then offset the path and added a gaussian blur to the new selection to finalize the lights. I used the option key to duplicate the lights and lined them up. Even though the logo looks fun, I don’t think it is a very versatile logo and it would look awkward on some material, so for the final project I want to figure out a way to make it look more like a clean logo. I’ll probably aim for only using two colors on the final logo, and I want to use the lights more strategically than how I did in this draft. The idea with the logo is to use it to brand the Concerts department of the Student Entertainment Board. Any posters or advertisements promoting the upcoming concerts would have this logo on it, so it I think it needs to be cleaner and simpler than my first draft.
